NEW TOWN WILLIAMSBURG, James City County, Virginia

New mixed-use town center next to Old Town Williamsburg

The 600 acre site is located next to the historic City of Williamsburg which is growing rapidly due to tourism and educational institutions such as the College of William and Mary. The new town master plan, which originally won an international design competition, is intended to serve as a model for more rational development in the region. Philip served as project manager and lead master planner for the new town center, providing ongoing design services for a new business park, retail program, public facilities and residential communities nearby. The Business Park is located on the northern edge of town center and is carefully placed on a ridge with views to a wetlands system. An important addition to the new town, the Business Park includes professional offices, a medical facility, a worship center and a research and development incubator for the College of William and Mary. One of the objectives of the master plan was to provide a set of zoning and design guidelines for the town in order to ensure architectural quality and place making consistent with the historic character of the Old Town.
